LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — As Las Vegas’ Chinatown continues to see a surge in visitors and congestion, FOX5 asked about plans to boost access and public transit options.

FOX5 has continued to report on the feedback-driven effort to develop a redevelopment plan for the area. For months, community members sought input from locals, businesses and tourists.

“We’ve got to make sure that we provide opportunities for both tourists and locals to get here safely,” said Commissioner Justin Jones, who is also chair of the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada. “We’ve got to expand parking opportunities. We also have to expand bus service.”

A new pedestrian crosswalk is coming to boost access between Chinatown Plaza and Shanghai Plaza in the heart of Chinatown. It will be completed by the end of the year.

“That’s why pedestrian access has always been the most important issue that we’re addressing here in this corridor. Not only will this be the first of its kind in terms of lighting the roadway as you cross, but also have traffic cameras that will make sure they read license plates. We know that we have break-ins out here in Chinatown area, and we’re making sure that we have the security systems in place as we make these improvements to keep people safe,” Jones said.
