LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Construction on the Reimagine Boulder Highway project paused for the Thanksgiving holiday and Black Friday as the years-long improvement effort continues toward its July 2027 completion date. Construction started in August 2024.
The project reached a milestone last week when newly installed storm drains successfully handled heavy rains without significant flooding in areas near Lake Mead and Sunset that are typically flood-prone.
Project organizers said the drainage systems installed above and below ground worked as designed during the recent storms.
Construction transforms highway layout
Orange cones line both sides of Boulder Highway from one end of Henderson to the other as crews work to transform the roadway. The project includes cutting down traffic lanes to make room for a center bus lane on a red raised platform, bike lanes and sidewalks.
“It is a mess and even trying to get to where I needed to go… you gotta go past, make the U turn,” said Bob Brownish, who has lived in Henderson for 26 years. However, Brownish believes the inconvenience will be worth the safety improvements.
“Over the years, there have been so many people injured and killed. Speed has been a factor,” Brownish said. “Obviously, there’s a lot of inconvenience right now, but something needed to be done.”
Project timeline and funding
The City of Henderson received nearly $40 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the project, which covers Boulder Highway within Henderson city limits.
Project organizers said the improvements will benefit residents, businesses and commuters for decades to come by making the road safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
