LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A social media influencer who works to help the homeless community across the nation made a stop in Las Vegas with a specific mission: to find one person he met eight months ago.
Victor Oliveira, known by millions as Victor “The Good Boss,” reached out with a plan when he landed in Las Vegas. He didn’t have an address, just a name, a general area and faith.
Finding hope on East Charleston
On a corner on East Charleston, amid noise, traffic and people on the street, some with signs and others asking for money, Victor met up with his team. This is where they hoped to find Jacob.
Victor has built a following by filming street-level outreach. He approaches people experiencing homelessness and addiction and offers them a lifeline. Through his nonprofit Fresh Start, he offers people treatment, covering the cost completely.
“I’ve been trying to clean up the streets, trying to give people a fresh start, a second chance at life and really just give them an opportunity that they wish they had,” Victor said.
Victor draws from personal experience in his work.
“I’ve had my struggle with addiction, I’m coming up on 14 years clean, I’ve been to prison, so I’ve always been a good person, I just made some stupid decisions, a part of me knows what it’s like for these people,” he said.
A success story returns
Victor travels the U.S. finding people to help, but this wasn’t his first time helping a Vegas local. Eight months ago, he met Tey on the same corner.
“He was just standing there just like this and he’s like, ‘wow, I want this opportunity,’ but he was being very quiet, very, very respectful,” Victor said.
Tey said this corner was where his life was eight months ago, where he slept and where he did whatever he could to make it to the next hour.
“I flew a sign right here on the corner, smoking fentanyl, I used to smoke behind this dumpster right here,” Tey said.
Then he met Victor.
“Like, it’s a miracle, it’s nothing short of a miracle, I tell people it’s like winning the lottery without playing it,” Tey said.
Tey got on a flight with Victor and underwent treatment in Florida. This was his first time back in Las Vegas.
“I’ve had the shakes since we pulled up here, I remember just up the way, hiding from traffic, hoping people didn’t call the cops on me where I slept at, sitting here all day and not making $5 to eat and eating out of dumpsters and stuff,” Tey said.
Second chances
Victor and Tey walked the streets where they first met, holding out hope of finding Jacob. Eight months ago, Victor actually approached Jacob first.
“I approached a young kid, his name was Jacob and I asked him if he wanted to get off the streets,” Victor said.
At the time, Jacob wasn’t ready to get clean, but they hoped seeing Tey would change his mind.
“I kept feeling like I robbed that kid of an opportunity,” Tey said.
They had no guarantee Jacob would still be there, but they spotted him.
“What up, Jacob?” Victor said. “How you doing, man? Good to see you. Remember me?”
“I heard you were coming,” Jacob said.
“Yeah, we wanted to make the trip up here and see if you were interested, man,” Victor said.
“Yeah, round two,” Jacob said.
Victor pointed to Tey’s transformation.
“Look how good he looks, why don’t you tell him how life is?” Victor said.
“I get to go to the beach every day, I don’t have all the problems I used to have, so I actually want to go to this every day,” Tey said.
“You’re not as angry,” Jacob observed.
“Not angry at all, I haven’t had a bad day since,” Tey said.
On the same stretch of street where Jacob once hesitated, he made a different choice.
“I’m down,” Jacob said.
“You’re down,” Victor confirmed.
“I’ll be down,” Jacob said.
Jacob chose to try.
“We all just need a little help sometimes and sometimes when we don’t get it, you just keep going down until you end up on the corner holding a sign, crying out to God every night. So just have a little compassion and remember we’re all the same, we’re all people,” Tey said.
Victor confirmed they were able to get Jacob fresh clothes, go to the DMV to have his identity verified, and they made their flight to Florida where Jacob will get the treatment he needs at no cost.
