NEVADA COUNTY, California (KOLO) – Update at 4:00 p.m.: The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office says the group comprised of 16 skiers, at least six of whom survived and are awaiting rescue.

The remaining 10 are considered unaccounted for.

46 emergency first responders are now searching for them in conditions considered highly dangerous.

An avalanche involving several backcountry skiers is being investigated in Nevada County.

The avalanche was reported at around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Castle Peak area.

Several members of the ski party are said to be missing at this time.

No further information was immediately available.
