LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A social media trend involving teenagers forcefully kicking the front doors of homes struck a home in the east Las Vegas four times in a single night last Friday.
A 17-year-old girl and her 14-year-old brother were home alone near Hollywood and Charleston when the incidents occurred. The 17-year-old, who asked not to be identified, said she was studying when the kicking started.
“It was really bad… I was studying, and I was okay, I was calm. And then I heard it, and then I kid you not, I started freaking shaking,” she said.
Footage showed repeated kicks, covered camera
The teen reviewed camera footage after the first incident and found the group returned multiple times — and covered the camera during some attempts.
“Kids trying to kick down — I don’t know, they’re just kicking the door and covering the camera for whatever reason… again and again,” she said.
She said the kicking stopped after she announced through the door that she was watching the last time the group returned.
Trend linked to damages, death in other cases
The incident is not isolated. FOX5 previously reported on a homeowner in North Las Vegas whose front door was kicked in July, causing $5,000 in damage. Video from September shows teens kicking a garage door in the Cadence neighborhood. In Texas, an 11-year-old was shot and killed by a homeowner after kicking a door.
North Las Vegas Police told FOX5 residents should call police if this happens at their home.
“A lot of folks are going to protect their home… the results can be very drastic,” said Officer Roberto Vaquera with the North Las Vegas Police Department. “Our children are being exposed to dangers that they are probably not aware of… perhaps in their mindset when you look at it as just a harmless prank, but these harmless pranks, unfortunately, you turn out you have some very negative consequences,” the Vaquera added.
Family hopes parents see the video
The homeowner told FOX5 there was no damage to the door. He hopes the parents of the children involved will see the video and speak with them.
