LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas police say a 10-year-old boy is dead after a crash near downtown Thursday night.
Officials with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said the crash happened just before 7 p.m. in the 2900 block of East Charleston Boulevard, near Eastern Avenue. Police said the crash involved the child and the driver of a pickup truck.
Lieutenant Cody Fulwiler said the boy was crossing the street outside a marked or implied crosswalk. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died.
The driver was located down the street. Police say they were not impaired, but speed will be determined in the investigation.
“As a reminder, not only for those on our roadways, pay attention and slow down, especially during the hours when it’s dark out,” Fulwiler said. “Also, to pedestrians, cross in crosswalks. And parents, please have conversations with your children about how to watch out for vehicles.”
Police initially reported that the driver was taken into custody, but Fulwiler did not confirm that detail during a media briefing.
Police said the area will be closed to foot and vehicle traffic while the investigation continues.
This is a developing story. Check back later for updates.
