LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — CCSD held a public meeting on its Facility Master Plan at Coronado High School, an effort to adapt to falling enrollment that could drop by nearly 20% by 2030.

District leaders say the decline is being driven largely by lower birth rates. CCSD outlined possible strategies including renovating, consolidating or relocating campuses with low enrollment.

CCSD says a 20% drop in enrollment could mean roughly 27,000 to 33,000 fewer students in the next five years. District leaders say it continues a trend they have been tracking for several years.

The district is looking at long-term capital investments, including construction and renovations, over the next ten years.

East valley, south areas most likely impacted

District leaders say some of the areas most likely to be impacted include parts of the east valley and the south. They shared a map showing campuses that could be replaced, renovated or repurposed, mostly elementary and middle schools.

CCSD says they are not naming specific schools yet because plans could change if enrollment rebounds in the coming years.

The meeting included people with long ties to the district, including former employees and residents with construction experience.

“It’s much needed because our city is changing, it’s evolving… and the school district needs to find out ways to adapt,” said Ted Goveia, a former CCSD employee and parent.

Others say they want more parents and teachers involved as the plan moves forward.

“I really encourage more parents to come out and teachers to come out to be a part of this process… we gained a lot of information on how to build these schools,” said John Regan, a retired CCSD employee.

The district said nothing has been finalized, and says it is still gathering recommendations and community feedback. Until that is finished, CCSD says changes will not happen.

CCSD says it has 39 more community engagement meetings scheduled in the coming weeks as it works to collect input from neighborhoods across the valley.
