LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — City leaders are seeking proposals for a new two-sheet ice arena in northwest Las Vegas as demand for hockey facilities grows.

Councilwoman Francis Allen-Palenske submitted a request for a proposal to bring the facility to the area.

“We don’t have enough ice for the demand in hockey. In Southern Nevada, it’s overwhelming,” Allen-Palenske said.

If approved, the arena would be built on five acres of city-owned land on Deer Springs Way near Centennial Parkway just off the 215. The location is at least 10 miles away from other hockey rinks in the city.

“Lots of young families in the Northwest, it’s a growing part of the city,” Allen-Palenske said.

Economic development potential

Allen-Palenske said the facility could spur additional development in the area.

“We hope that this stems significant capital investment in the area. We have open land to the east of it and open land to the west of it,” she said. “Potentially we could have a sports complex going, but this is the first step.”

The proposal comes as Las Vegas continues to expand its professional sports presence. All four major sports will be represented in the city by 2028.

Growing demand for ice time

Players and parents at Las Vegas Ice Center said they support additional facilities.

Conor Flynn said his six-year-old son plays in the house league.

“We’ve had to learn all the gear you need, how to get ice time, how to get on a team. It’s a whole new world for me,” Flynn said.

Flynn said he has watched hockey grow in Las Vegas since the Golden Knights arrived.

“I went to one of the first Knights exhibition games so I’ve seen it all first hand,” he said. “A lot of kids are trying to play it so I think additional ice time would be fantastic for the community.”

The proposal period is open through June 15. Las Vegas Ice Center kicks off its house league on June 7.
