LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Parts of North Las Vegas, especially near City Hall, are now the focus of new redevelopment efforts aimed at some of the city’s oldest neighborhoods.

New grants are available to help property owners fix up homes and businesses in what the city is calling its redevelopment district. Councilwoman Ruth Garcia Anderson said the funding is only available in specific parts of North Las Vegas.

“A program like this will not only enhance the communities, but it will also help homeowners increase their property values,” Garcia Anderson said.

Residential program offers up to $25,000

The residential curb appeal program offers up to $25,000 in reimbursement for improvements including roof repairs, landscaping, paint and windows.

“If they want to remove trees or plant new trees or get new rocks or get a new door, new windows, I mean, the possibilities are endless,” Garcia Anderson said.

A separate program for businesses in the same area offers up to $75,000 for improvements like storefronts, lighting and signage.

Marcos Perez, owner of Casa Del Desayuno, said that kind of support could make a real difference.

“Especially here at the Lake Mead location, it’s in a rougher area. So the outside is extremely important. It makes people feel welcome. It makes people feel comfortable if they come into an area that is clean, that’s organized,” Perez said.

Perez said even maintaining what he already has takes constant investment, something that has only gotten harder in recent weeks.

“It’s been tough. I don’t know if you’ve seen a case of tomato right now, it’s like 90 bucks a case, which it went from $17 to $90. I mean, it’s a very tough economy and it’s very tough for business owners right now to make ends meet,” Perez said.

How to apply

Homeowners and business owners must first apply and receive approval before starting work on improvements. Once work is completed, reimbursement could come within about 30 days.

“We’re requiring certain things to ensure that the work that is done is done by experts, right? So if you’re gonna hire people to work on your house, you gotta make sure that they’re contractors that have a license in Nevada,” Garcia Anderson said.

Applications are open now. The city has bilingual representatives available to help Spanish speakers with the process.

To check if a property qualifies, homeowners and business owners can check their property tax district on the North Las Vegas website.
