LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas Metropolitan Police released new details about a multi-vehicle crash that occurred last fall and resulted in a man’s death six months later.
The collision happened around 1:24 p.m. on Sept. 15, 2025, at Durango and Alta. Detectives report a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado was making a left turn from southbound Durango to eastbound Alta and failed to yield the right of way.
According to LVMPD, a Toyota Camry and a Honda Civic were heading north on Durango with a green light when they hit the right side of the Silverado. The impact spun the truck counterclockwise and pushed it east of the intersection.
The rear of the Silverado then hit a stopped Toyota Corolla that was waiting in the westbound left-turn lane on Alta.
The Camry’s driver and both people in the Silverado had minor injuries. The Civic’s driver, 67-year-old Thomas Smith of Las Vegas, suffered serious injuries and was taken to UMC Trauma. He was later diagnosed as quadriplegic.
Smith was discharged from UMC on March 25, 2026, and admitted to Nathan Adelson Hospice. Police say he was pronounced dead there the night of March 26 at 11:20 p.m.
The Clark County Coroner’s Office has advised Metro that Smith died from injuries sustained in the crash. However, under federal rules, a traffic death is only counted as a “fatality” if it happens within 30 days of the collision, so this case will not be assigned a federal fatal number.
LVMPD said the crash is still under investigation by its Collision Investigation Section.
