LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – May is Stroke Awareness Month, and all month long FOX5 is partnering with the Sunrise Health System to educate our viewers on the signs and symptoms of stroke. A medical emergency where every second counts.
A stroke occurs when blood supply to part of the brain is suddenly interrupted. Time is critical as damage to brain cells is irreversible. There can be ways to act fast and keep a look out for potential signs and symptoms. Once damage occurs brain cells cannot be regenerated and are lost permanently. That’s why it’s important to recognize signs of stroke and B.E.F.A.S.T.
Signs and symptoms:
WOMEN AND STROKE
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in women and kills more women than men. One in five women will have a stroke.
- Women tend to live longer and age itself is a risk factor.
- Two in five women have Hypertension or Prehypertension.
- Certain types of birth control cause higher risk.
CHILDREN AND STROKE
Stroke in children can happen at any age including before birth, in utero. Although symptoms of stroke in children are very similar to that of adults, parents should also be aware of excessive sleepiness, severe sudden onset headaches, and vomiting as possible warning signs. This can also happen with certain types of diseases like Sickle Cell disease or Moya Moya disease, but most commonly stroke to the brain in children occurs due to trauma.
Talk to your doctor or a stroke specialist and discuss what you can do to lower your risk. Some common recommendations for lowering risk are:
- Eating Healthy
- Staying active
- Monitoring blood sugar/pressure/cholesterol
- Avoid Smoking
