LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A suspect is in custody after police say a shoplifting call at a North Las Vegas Target escalated into an armed chase that ended at a local high school.
North Las Vegas police say officers were called just before 11 a.m. Thursday, May 14, to a Target store in the 7000 block of North 5th Street after a report that a man was hiding merchandise in a backpack.
Police say the suspect, later identified as Jallel Jenkins-Harris, ran when officers approached and pulled out a handgun as he fled through the store.
He then ran out the back of the store and pointed the gun at a police sergeant before running into a nearby neighborhood.

During the search, officers linked him to an incident at a nearby home where a sliding glass door was shattered, consistent with an attempted break-in, according to officials.
Police and an air unit later tracked Jenkins-Harris to Legacy High School, where officers say he walked near the baseball and softball fields while armed.
Hall monitors told investigators the suspect fired a shot from about 60 to 100 yards away in their direction, and they retreated inside as the school was placed on lockdown.
Police say Jenkins-Harris dropped his backpack while moving across the school grounds. Investigators reported the backpack contained stolen Target items and his ID.
During the confrontation, an officer fired two rounds that did not hit him.
Police say Jenkins-Harris then shot himself in the jaw and was taken into custody and transported to UMC for treatment, where he is said to be in stable condition.
Investigators say the handgun was a Glock 48 9mm that had been reported stolen earlier that morning in a separate robbery.
Police also say Jenkins-Harris is a convicted felon.
He faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder with a deadly weapon, assault on a protected person with a deadly weapon, resisting an officer with a firearm, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, attempted home invasion with a weapon, robbery with a deadly weapon, and possessing a weapon on school property.
Jenkins-Harris is due back in court on Tuesday.
