LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Part of a southeast Las Vegas Valley trail could be shut down to stop homeless encampments in the area, according to a proposal from one County Commissioner.
The proposal impacts the path that’s designated as an extension of the Flamingo-Arroyo trail: it runs along I-11 South by Sahara Avenue, and continues southbound past Boulder Highway.

County commissioners are set to review the proposal on Tuesday during the Board of Commissioners meeting. According to the agenda, Public Works asked for commissioners to weigh in on the issue: whether to shut down a stretch of the trail by Sandhill Road and Boulder Highway.
“I’m proposing that we close the trail and make sure that the homeless can’t camp there,” Segerblom said, noting that encampments often move when relocated elsewhere.
“That’s one of the issues we have: we’re having to impact the recreational user and the commuter, until we get control over the homeless issue,” he said.
FOX5 has covered chronic concerns in the area, from encampments along the trails, along freeway embankments and in surrounding neighborhoods.
Allan Ponce, a mechanic whose shop is right beside the trail, tells FOX5 that sometimes the homeless jump the fence and steal things.
As a bike user, Ponce says encampments and some dangerous individuals may sometimes crowd the path, but he is concerned about a possible shutdown.
“I hope they don’t shut it down, because it’s been there for many years. Many people use it. And it’ll be sad,” Ponce said.
At a nearby RV park, one resident said she’s fed up with trash, debris and paraphernalia– and is concerned to walk her dogs in the area.
“I wish there was a way to keep it open and almost encamping there, but I don’t know if that’s possible,” she tells FOX5.
If the decision for a closure moves forward, Public Works staff will come back to county leaders with a proposal for the area, Segerblom tells FOX5.
