LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A local nonprofit is helping Las Vegas immigrant families prepare for what they call a dignified return to Mexico.

Whether someone is returning by choice or facing deportation, New Comienzos is working to make sure a plan is in place on both sides of the border.

Ana Estrada has lived in Las Vegas for over five years. She is currently in the process of appealing a deportation order.

“Right now, I’m struggling with the fear and uncertainty that even if I go out on the street, I might be stopped by immigration officials,” Estrada said.

Nonprofit offers support on both sides of border

For many immigrant families, uncertainty about the future can be overwhelming. New Comienzos says that’s where they hope to help.

“We help Mexican nationals who are considering returning to their home country for whatever the reason may be so they can do it in a structured, dignified way with companionship,” said Israel Concha, founder of New Comienzos.

Concha said they have volunteers on both sides of the border ready to help.

“We can help them with emotional support, legal support, food vouchers, referring you to a shelter, English certifications, you name it, many social services. But there’s one very important one, a mentoring program,” Concha said.

Welcome boxes provide resources and guidance

Concha said they’ve created welcome boxes designed to help people like Estrada prepare for what comes next.

“Inside you’ll find all kinds of information. We have a guide that it doesn’t matter what part of Mexico you go to, you’ll be able to find local resources. So your reintegration can be a lot better,” Concha said.

Estrada said learning about some of the resources available through New Comienzos has helped replace fear with a plan.

“Through this Dream in Mexico program, Welcome Boxes, they have been guiding and helping me so that, if I ever face deportation proceedings, I’ll know what to do, where to go, and what to do if I’m in a detention center,” Estrada said.

New Comienzos also works to help families traveling back to Mexico who have pets, making sure they are able to make their journey together.
