LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — As the country marks its 250th birthday, Henderson is honoring its hometown heroes with a display of military banners in the Water Street District.
The banners, mounted on streetlight poles, bear the names, military branches and images of men and women currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. They hang near the city’s Veterans Memorial Wall outside City Hall, alongside other patriotic displays in the area.

A father hangs his son’s banner
Among the most recent additions is a banner for Kyle Buckles, a U.S. Coast Guard member. His parents, Matthew and Corinne Buckles, are both City of Henderson employees.
Matthew was given the opportunity to personally hang his son’s banner.
“To have the opportunity and the honor to hang it up — it’s definitely special,” Matthew Buckles said.
Corinne Buckles described the moment as emotional.
“The tears are coming, the emotions are here, but it just makes us very proud — that his dad gets to put it out,” she said. “It’s just so, so special.”
Corinne Buckles said seeing the banners has long held meaning for her.
“I think for me, just growing up in Henderson, I would see the banners up and it just brought nostalgia to me,” she said.
Community reaction
Residents in the Water Street District said the banners carry personal weight.
“My husband was in the Air Force, my dad was in the Army, my brother was in the Marines,” said Tracy Dugger. “So I think it’s amazing to see the heroes.”
Donna Wilburn echoed that sentiment.
“That’s someone’s son, someone’s dad, someone’s brother,” Wilburn said. “And it’s good to see that they’re recognized. These are people we know.”
Program details
The City of Henderson says the banners are displayed because the land of the free is only possible because of the brave. Banners are also displayed on Green Valley Parkway and remain up for approximately one year. The program is sponsored by the Raiders Foundation.
