LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign glowed in pink and green this week as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, arrived in the valley for its 72nd International Boule.

Clark County Commissioner William McCurdy II hosted a ceremony at the landmark sign, turning it to the sorority’s signature colors to mark the occasion. More than 25,000 members are expected in the Las Vegas area for the convention.

Community service planned throughout the week

Local officials praised the sorority’s economic impact and its plans in Clark County. Danette Anthony, president and CEO of AKA International, said the organization’s work extends beyond the convention halls.

“Our mission is service to all mankind,” Anthony said. “We’re building childhood hunger initiative power packs so children have food over the weekend, and we’re preparing personal hygiene kits.”

The lighting ceremony recognized the organization’s 118-year legacy of service, scholarship and sisterhood. Leaders said the Boule runs through next week, with members spending time both in convention halls and out in the community.
