LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The “Reimagine Boulder Highway” project in Henderson is now estimated to cost $185 million and is not scheduled for completion until August 2027, leaving drivers and residents facing another year of construction along the corridor.

The project began two years ago. The city of Henderson partnered with the Regional Transportation Commission of Clark County, using federal funding, to overhaul the 7.5-mile stretch of Boulder Highway within city limits. The biggest reason: safety. A 2020 RTC study found that approximately 10% of all pedestrian fatalities in Nevada occurred on Boulder Highway.

What the project includes

The $120 million makeover — now revised to $185 million — aims to modernize the old highway, which once connected workers constructing Hoover Dam to downtown Las Vegas. Construction has introduced hundreds of new street lights, tens of thousands of feet of new storm drains, raised red concrete bus platforms and bus stops positioned in the center of Boulder Highway. Buses along the route currently display warnings that riders should expect delays due to construction.

Resident raises safety concerns

Alisa Sterling, who lives near Boulder Highway, recently launched a petition on Change.org calling for a review of the project before, in her words, “more damage is done.”

“I just don’t feel safe on the road currently,” Sterling said.

Sterling cited potholes, lane conditions and lighting as her primary concerns as a driver.

“I feel as a resident and a commuter in this area that safety isn’t really being prioritized at the moment with how the roads are at the moment.”

She also questioned the placement of bus stops in the center of the roadway and the project’s overall cost.

“It just makes driving frustrating, it makes commuting frustrating, the congestion is unreal out here — getting from A to B,” Sterling said. “Just kind of put yourself in our shoes for a day and just come over here and see how it really affects and impacts our life.”
