LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — County officials have deemed a building unsafe for entry after a strip mall’s roof collapsed on Wednesday.
Shortly before noon on Wednesday at 6105 W. Flamingo Rd., Clark County Fire crews rescued three people from both buildings, cutting through a wall to free one person who was trapped inside Marco’s Pizza. Officials confirmed no one was seriously hurt.
The building housed a Subway and Marco’s Pizza.
Thursday, passersby could see red tags surrounding the building warning “Danger: this structure is deemed unsafe”; entry is unlawful, per the County Building Department’s Administrative Code Enforcement Team (ACET).
FOX5 learned the next steps from the county, which include an order for repairs or demolition:
We will be issuing a Notice and Order to the record owner of the building to require the owner to obtain permits for the repair of the building (or for the demolition of the building, if the owner so chooses). It will be the owner’s responsibility to retain the services of a Nevada-licensed structural engineer to evaluate the damage and recommend necessary repairs/improvements, and it will be the owner’s responsibility to hire Nevada-registered design professionals to prepare plans for the required building permits for the repairs.
FOX5 asked the County for a timeline for action, and if the building had any records of issues prior to the roof collapse.
Records show the lot was built in 1988, and recently purchased in 2022.
Regular customers had noticed the state of the roof.
“Everybody knew that there was a problem. I mean, the thing was dramatically bowed,” said customer Nick Malis Wednesday, who had left the building right before the collapse.
Wednesday, the building’s landlord spoke with FOX5 off camera, and said he is working with the Clark County Building Department.
FOX5 reached out to the registered owner of the lot for comment.
Thursday, the phone line to Marco’s Pizza was rerouted to a nearby location; staff told customers that a building inspector was set to visit in the next few days.
Passersby in the busy area are getting an eyeful.
“It’s a tragedy. I think it’s terrible,” said commuter Gary Beckman. “Help them rebuild it, so we can get more businesses in there… It’s better for the community,” he said.
