HENDERSON (FOX5) — More than 150 middle and high school students took part in the first Henderson Interfaith Youth Night of Service Tuesday at Congregation Ner Tamid.
The event ran from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the congregation, located near Valle Verde Drive and the 215 Beltway.
Students make items for animal shelter
Students cut fleece, tied blankets and made dog toys for the Henderson Animal Shelter during the event.
The Interfaith Youth Service Committee, made up of teen representatives from across Henderson, organized the event. The pilot program welcomed attendees from Congregation Ner Tamid, Midbar Kodesh Temple, New Song Anthem Church and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Group focuses on respectful disagreement
Youth leaders said they invited a local group to coach teens on how to listen and disagree respectfully.
“It’s spectacular to see everyone here, to see everyone communicate and get to know each other,” a youth leader said. “It’s really more about — like the service part is super important, but it’s really about a bunch of youth getting together and getting to know each other, because that’s super important.”
Organizers called the event a pilot project and said they are already discussing making it a yearly tradition. Leaders said they hope more faith communities, and non-religious students, join next year.
