LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — As several autonomous vehicles enter the Las Vegas market, Waymo just told FOX5 about its plans for operating at Harry Reid International Airport.
“Waymo recently received permission to drive fully autonomously at Harry Reid International Airport (LAS). As the company prepares to open its service to the public, it will begin by offering autonomous airport trips to employees. This testing phase ensures a seamless and convenient future experience for Las Vegas residents and visitors,” said Waymo officials.
It was announced this week that Commissioners with the Nevada Transportation Authority unanimously approved applications for Tesla Robotaxi, Waymo and Aviari Services to operate Autonomous Vehicle Network Companies in Nevada.
A news release from the Nevada Department of Business & Industry said, “However, companies will not be allowed to service the airport without first obtaining the necessary authorization from the Clark County Department of Aviation.”
FOX5 has reached out to the airport for more details on autonomous vehicle companies operating there and is waiting to hear back.
The new release said approvals are subject to compliance with requirements established by the NTA before vehicles may be placed in service.
“The permits also require the companies to report crashes (pursuant to NRS 706B.260) and other events as required by law, maintain inspection (subject to NRS 706B.220), maintenance and repair records subject to (NRS 706B.220), and operate only within the scope of authority granted by the NTA,” stated the release.
Waymo said its service will help make things safe, easy, and convenient to get to and from the airport.
