LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A Las Vegas tax preparer is headed to federal prison for more than three years after admitting he helped file millions of dollars in fake tax refunds and kept part of the money for himself.
Prosecutors say Ivan Odiaga worked at Silver State Tax and Multiservices in Las Vegas, a business owned by his mother, Iris Hondermann. Between 2017 and 2021, the two filed hundreds of false returns, adding made-up business profits and losses, COVID sick-leave credits, and energy credits their clients did not qualify for.

Investigators say they sought more than $5 million in refunds their clients weren’t entitled to and diverted more than $1.1 million of those refunds into bank accounts they controlled. At times, Odiaga also used another tax preparer’s federal ID number without permission.
Hondermann has already pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United States. The IRS Criminal Investigation unit says the case is a warning to tax professionals who abuse their position of trust and steal from taxpayers.
