LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Meet Dusty, the diamondback rattlesnake mascot carrying Desert Oasis High School into the national limelight. As the sole contender representing Nevada in the nationwide contest for America’s Best High School Mascot, the spirited serpent has sparked unprecedented campus pride.
“I would say he’s very energetic. Just a hype man for everybody. I think it’s awesome how we’re representing Nevada. It definitely says a lot about our school and how strong our student body is.”
Dusty has propelled Desert Oasis into the Final Four after outlasting 60 rival contenders across the country. Hosted by The 64 in partnership with Jostens—the prominent brand recognized for class rings, letterman jackets, and yearbooks—the bracket-style competition began with an anonymous nomination that rapidly transformed into a full-scale campus movement.

“We’ve put in a lot of work as a student council to really build that culture and morale and it’s starting to pay off. And to have the student body behind us, it shows that we’re buying into the culture. Having good morale and spirit. Having this fine specimen lead the way.”
Supporters across the state are encouraged to back Nevada’s lone finalist by casting their ballots online at www.the64.com. Securing the national crown would mark a defining achievement for the school community.
“Winning that title, throwing up a banner on the wall just to remember that, if we all get behind something we can achieve it.”
Voting for the Final Four round concludes Thursday, October 29th, with the ultimate winner scheduled to be announced Monday, November 2nd.
