LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Firefighters and police are responding to a fire in downtown Las Vegas Friday afternoon.
The fire was reported at 1215 S. Las Vegas Boulevard, south of Charleston Boulevard. The area is near the Arts District and several hotels, motels, apartment complexes and chapels.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said they were responding to a barricaded person in the area, leading to several closures. LVMPD said a person has refused to comply with officers and SWAT is on scene.
LVMPD confirmed the barricade was connected to the fire investigation.
FOX5 has reached out to Las Vegas Fire and Rescue for more information on the fire, but has yet to hear back.
LVMPD advised avoiding the area due to police activity.
Just after 3 p.m., LVMPD posted on social media that a K9 on duty was seriously injured while responding to the barricade. Police say the K9 was airlifted to a local animal hospital.
In an afternoon media briefing, police said that the barricaded subject set a small fire in his apartment. When SWAT arrived at the scene, the suspect came out and was armed with a knife.
A police spokesperson said that the department used several non-lethal options to take the suspect into custody, including K9 Enzo, who was stabbed. The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital.
Police said employing a K9 unit in this type of incident is standard for the department.
