LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Nye County Sheriff Joe McGill provided an update on a deputy-involved shooting from earlier this week, revealing that a suspect pointed a handgun at a deputy during the incident.
On May 14, the Nye County Sheriff’s Office received a call requesting a welfare check after an elderly resident reportedly hadn’t been seen in approximately one week. Deputy Nicholas Huggins responded to the residence of Michael Byers, 81.
Body camera footage released by the sheriff’s office shows Huggins knocking on the front door before exploring the side and rear of the residence for approximately three and a half minutes. When the deputy returned to the front door, Byers emerged and pointed a handgun at him as a pair of dogs ran at the deputy.
Sheriff McGill said that Deputy Huggins fired shots one through five before the suspect returned fire, then went back into his home and called 911. Huggins called for an additional unit and Byers was later taken into custody without incident.
The sheriff said that Byers was taken to a nearby hospital for a “superficial injury” and was released and then booked. He is facing one charge of attempted murder with a deadly weapon and one charge of assault with a deadly weapon on a protected person.
Deputy Huggins has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure following a deputy-involved shooting. Sheriff McGill said that this is Huggins’ third deputy-involved shooting since he joined the office in 2021.
