LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A federal judge who served the state of Nevada for over two decades died on Wednesday.
Judge Larry R. Hicks was appointed to the federal bench by President George W. Bush and was sworn in as United States District Court Judge for the District of Nevada in 2001. Judge Hicks received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1965 and his law degree from the University of Colorado in 1968.
Hicks began his legal career as a Washoe County prosecutor in 1968 and served as the county District Attorney there from 1974-1978.
According to KOLO in Reno, Hicks was killed in a crash in midtown Reno on Wednesday afternoon. He was reportedly hit at about 2:15 p.m. as he walked through the intersection at South Virginia Street and California Avenue near the federal courthouse.
The Reno Police Department said he was taken to the hospital but was declared dead.
The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators, police said. Impairment does not appear to be a factor.
Hicks is the father of Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks.
Flags at federal courthouses in Nevada will be flown at half-staff in his honor.
