LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – According to an arrest report obtained by FOX5, the suspect in a wrong-way DUI rollover crash that left a corrections officer with serious injuries showed little remorse for his actions, saying that “people die every day.”
Nevada Highway Patrol officers responded shortly after 4 a.m. on May 31 after reports of a crash involving two vehicles on northbound US 95 near mile marker 101, seven miles north of State Route 157, Kyle Canyon Road. Lt. Jonathan Rivera, an employee at High Desert State Prison, was airlifted from the scene with “substantial injuries.”
The suspect, Donovan Garcia Moreno, was found sitting in the median and initially told officers that he was a passenger in a rideshare vehicle. According to the arrest report, the suspect’s face was “covered in blood” and he was missing one shoe. Officers also reported smelling “a strong odor of an unknown intoxicating beverage emitting from his person.”
No other passengers were found in the vehicle, and officers confirmed that the suspect had seatbelt markings on his body consistent with sitting in the driver’s seat.
“Based on my training and experience, when someone presents with seatbelt markings consistent with being in the driver’s seat, having the key on their person, and having significant injuries from a rollover, they are most likely the driver trying to hide the fact that they were driving,” the officer stated in his report.
Garcia Moreno admitted to officers that he had consumed “a few beers” and he refused to take a field sobriety test. He was taken to UMC Trauma for treatment of his injuries.
According to the arrest report, while resting in his hospital bed, the suspect asked if anyone was seriously hurt. He was informed about the corrections officer’s injuries and reportedly “showed no remorse in stating that people die every day.”
Garcia Moreno is facing charges of DUI, reckless driving, driving the wrong way on a one-way road, and driving without a license. He has an appearance in Clark County Justice Court scheduled for Thursday, June 6.
