PAHRUMP (FOX5) — The Nye County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) is releasing additional information about two recent deaths that occurred while individuals were in custody, including body-worn video from one incident.

According to NCSO, the first death occurred Wednesday, June 10. The deceased was identified as Stevie Miller, 30, of Pahrump. Because the investigation is ongoing, officials said they cannot release further details at this time.

The second incident happened a week later, on June 17, at a home in Pahrump. The deceased in that case was identified as Christopher Stewart, 40, also of Pahrump, officials said.

NCSO says the call began as a report of a home invasion. Stewart allegedly kicked in the front door of a neighbor’s apartment and was found standing over a sleeping elderly woman. Officials said Stewart was known to deputies and had a history of violence toward law enforcement.

In the body-worn video released by authorities, Stewart appears visibly agitated and is seen fighting with three deputies multiple times when they told him he was going to jail, then attempting to run after being tased four times, police said.

After the arrest, Stewart was taken to Desert View Hospital to be treated for a minor laceration. Officials said he was alert and oriented while at the hospital. Later that night, Stewart suffered a medical incident. Hospital staff attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy has been performed to determine the cause of death, but NCSO said results are not expected for several months.

Officials also said deputies’ use of force and actions during the arrest were within the scope of law and policy, and that deputies showed restraint in trying to prevent a physical altercation.
