LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — North Las Vegas police released body camera footage of a police shooting involving an armed man walking on a school campus.

Jallel Jenkins-Harris faces multiple felony charges, including assault, attempted murder, possession of a firearm on school property, and possession of a stolen firearm. Police said the incident started at a nearby retail store near 5th Street and Deer Springs Way on May 14.

Jenkins-Harris is accused of shoplifting. Multiple reports said he was walking through the store holding a firearm, according to police. Arriving officers set a perimeter. He fled through the rear doors, and police said he pointed a firearm at an officer.

Police said he continued to flee across North 5th Street into a residential neighborhood. Through investigation, police learned he entered multiple properties. One homeowner told officers their patio door was forced open, and they found clothing belonging to him.

A Metro Air Unit followed him as Jenkins-Harris started walking on the baseball and softball fields of Legacy High School. Police said he was still armed, and later dropped his backpack on the floor.

Police said three school monitors tried to approach him, but Jenkins-Harris fired toward their direction. They fled back to campus. Both Legacy High School and Northeast Career and Technical Academy were placed on lockdown.

The officer involved in the police shooting has been identified as Manuel Vital. According to a media briefing and bodycam footage, he saw Jenkins-Harris walk closer to the school campus, while still armed.

Police said he fired two rounds. Neither of the shots struck the suspect. Police said Jenkins-Harris stopped walking and turned the gun on himself, and he sustained a gunshot wound.

Police said he was immediately taken into custody, and officers on scene provided aid. Tuesday, FOX5 learned he is still hospitalized.

Through investigation, police learned that the firearm was stolen in an incident within the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction. Police said Jenkins-Harris has been arrested more than 20 times across Metro and the NLVPD’s jurisdiction, with prior felonies in Nevada.

Vital has been with North Las Vegas police since 2006. He has been put on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, police said.
