LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The former Cesar Chavez Park celebrated its new name this weekend following a Clark County Commission vote earlier this week.

The commission approved the park’s new name: Mariachi Park. Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom gathered with county leaders Saturday to host a sign unveiling. The group Mariachi Joya held a performance at the event.

Segerblom said the new name represents hundreds of years of Latino and Mexican culture.

“We talked about different names and truthfully there are a thousand people we could have named it but this is a very positive thing,” Segerblom said. “This is Las Vegas, we were proud of Mexico before the United States so let’s brag about it and make people feel proud about being from Mexico.”

The renaming came after sexual assault allegations against Cesar Chavez surfaced in March.
