LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Families packed Clark County Wetlands Park on Saturday for Discovery Day, a free, family-friendly event designed to bring nature close to home.

The event, now in its eighth year, was held at the Wetlands Park Nature Center and featured about 20 partner agencies, along with free snow cones and crafts. Organizers expected 500 to 600 people to attend. Mascots including Rusty the Beaver, Dexter the Raccoon, Mojave Max and Tommy the Turtle — a Clark County Aquatics mascot tied to swimming safety education — were also on hand.

Kids got to meet live animal ambassadors and learn how to explore the park safely during the summer heat.

“Because we care about the wildlife here, so it’s a chance for them to have fun and learn a little bit about the habitats here at Wetlands Park and the wildlife,” said Sheila Glennie, recreation cultural specialist at Clark County Wetlands Park.

Glennie also highlighted the park’s indoor offerings for summer visitors.

“During the summer and year-round inside, we have this wonderful nature center and exhibit gallery where you can come and explore — little samples about the park right here in the nature center,” Glennie said.

Park hours and July Fourth closure

The outdoor trails are open daily from dawn to dusk. The nature center and exhibit gallery are open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Because of high fire risk, all trails and trailheads will be closed on July Fourth.
