LAS VEGAS (FOX5) —As injuries and deaths continue on Nevada roads, the group Zero Fatalities is urging people to plan a sober ride over the Fourth of July — and is encouraging a discount to help make that happen.
“A lot of friends, family and loved ones are going to be getting together but make sure that you plan a sober ride,” said Zero Fatalities Program Manager Anita Pepper.
The research behind the message
Anita Pepper, also with the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, said the act of simply talking about a safe way home can make a difference.
“Who’s going to drive or who’s going to be the sober driver, designated driver? Or are we using a rideshare? The research shows that when people talk about safe driving behaviors, the rate of fatalities go down,” said Pepper.
The Lyft offer
Zero Fatalities has partnered with Lyft to offer $5 off a ride. The discount is available from noon July 4 through 6 a.m. July 5. Riders can redeem $5 off one Lyft trip using the code SAFERIDEJULY4TH. The offer is available to 300 riders total, one ride per rider, while supplies last. The discount can be redeemed directly in the Lyft app or by visiting: https://www.lyft.com/lp/SAFERIDEJULY4TH.
Pepper said even one person using the discount could matter.
“I’d be grateful if one person’s mind was changed and they decided to use another option rather than getting behind the wheel impaired. And that’s why we have this option,” said Pepper.
Impact on families
Pepper said she’s seen the impact of impaired driving firsthand. She has talked to victims’ families.
“I’ve met so many wonderful people and the stories that they share about their loved ones, it breaks my heart to think that they’re not here and that’s why I do the work that I do,” she said.
Pepper has also talked with impaired drivers.
“The people that I’ve met are very open about their stories,” said Pepper. “And they wish something that happened in an instant, they would do anything to go back and just make a different choice.”
Pepper also said people need to be aware about the impacts of prescription medication while driving.
“Or if one of your loved ones is on a new medication. Don’t be afraid to ask them or ask the doctor; Is this okay to drive on this? Or is there a time period I should wait before I get behind the wheel of a car,” said Pepper.
Pepper also said if people don’t use the Lyft discount, there are other options to get home safely, including other rideshares, taxies and public transportation.
