LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The children of a 58-year-old woman found shot to death inside a Las Vegas home last Saturday are calling for justice as police continue their investigation.

Dorothy Baines was found shot dead inside a home near Lake Mead Boulevard and Decatur. According to Metro Police, officers responded after a man called 911 reporting his roommate had been shot. Investigators say a verbal argument between Baines and her roommate escalated into a struggle over a firearm, which discharged, killing Baines.

Family disputes police account

Baines’ daughters say they do not believe their mother’s death was simply the result of a struggle. They say they believe it was the result of domestic violence.

“I feel like she was getting ready to pull away, and he felt that, and he didn’t like that. It was like if I can’t have you, no one can,” said Baines’ daughter, De’Ja Taylor.

The family also said they learned of Baines’ death through news reports before police had notified them. They said they did not receive an update about the investigation from the police until Tuesday.

No arrest made; case headed to DA

Police initially detained the roommate, but no arrest has been made. On Thursday, Metro Police confirmed that once their investigation is complete, they will send their findings to the district attorney’s office for review.

“We are hoping that they gather all the information and put him away. Justice needs to be served,” said Tiana Hill, Baines’ daughter.

Baines’ daughters described her as a devoted mother, a proud grandmother, and the heart of their family. “She was awesome, she was amazing, so bright and giving, and I think her heart is what got her here in the first place,” said Taylor.

The family has organized a GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses at gofund.me/26243f218.
