LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Friends and family of Michael Kimbrough have rebuilt a roadside memorial for the second time after it was vandalized following a fatal hit-and-run last month.

A custom cross and floral arrangement now mark the location on West Ann Road near Rainbow Boulevard where Kimbrough was killed. It is the second memorial his friends have put up in his honor after the first tribute was vandalized.

Driver left the scene

North Las Vegas police said officers were dispatched to West Ann Road and Whitestone Drive at about 3:35 a.m. Sept. 19 in reference to a collision involving a motorcyclist and an SUV. Kimbrough was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation indicates a 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling west on Ann Road when a 2019 Honda CR-V was traveling south on Whitestone Drive attempting a left turn onto eastbound Ann Road, police said. As the Honda pulled out for the turn, the motorcyclist collided with the left side of the SUV, according to police.

The driver of the SUV left the scene before police or emergency crews arrived.

John Orndoff described his relationship with Kimbrough.

“We went riding, we would go ride, do things together, work on vehicles, go to car shows. He was the godfather of my child,” Orndoff said.

Orndoff spoke about the moments after the crash.

“If you had stopped or even came to a kind of stop here, you would have been able to hear him,” Orndoff said.

Memorial built days later

Friends and family built the memorial a few days after Kimbrough’s death.

“He was an amazing person; this was the least we could do for his family. We wanted to show his family he was loved,” Kelzia Kirkland said.

The community’s homeowners association allowed them to use the space for the next year to honor Kimbrough’s life and remind drivers to slow down.

Friends said they were shocked when they received a call that the large cross had been stolen and the floral arch destroyed. They are urging the person who took the items to return them.

“We are not even asking you to come talk to us; we just want you to put it back where you found it or, better yet, where you stole it,” Kirkland said.

Friends seek information

Kimbrough lived down the road from the intersection where he was killed. His friends said every time they drive home, they are reminded that the person responsible for his death has not been arrested. They said they hope the memorial urges anyone with information to come forward.

“Do the right thing, he does have a family to … we all do make mistakes,” Orndoff said.

North Las Vegas police are investigating the incident. The family has offered a reward for information.
