LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas police say a county subcontractor cleaned up a homeless camp off Sunset Road near Decatur Boulevard, a day after our report on conditions there.

People at a nearby business said they were happy about the cleanup, especially after making several complaints about it.

On Tuesday, FOX5 talked to two homeless people at the camp who said most of the items belonged to them. They said they had been collecting items from dumpsters since last May. They told us they sold the items, traded them, or sold copper wire found in discarded appliances to eat and feed their three dogs.

Displaced resident describes short notice

While businesses said they were happy about the cleanup, one of the homeless people said she again has to find a new place to go and didn’t have much time to pack up her belongings.

“They gave us about 15 minutes, which felt like a lot less. How do you gather everything in 15 minutes? It’s not really possible, so here we are,” she said.

LVMPD officers on scene said resources exist to help homeless people displaced from cleanups like this one, but more than 90% refuse help because they do not like dealing with restrictions at homeless shelters.
