LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The American Red Cross is urging Southern Nevadans to step up as blood donations nationwide hit a critical four-year summer low, placing severe strain on healthcare facilities entering the final weeks of summer.
Officials say that registering just three additional donors at every scheduled blood drive could help stabilize the national supply. The Red Cross declared an emergency blood shortage on July 13 after its national supply plummeted by nearly 25% in a single month, followed by a formal national blood crisis declaration two weeks later.
“Three people may not sound like a lot, but adding three donors to every blood drive across the country could make a real difference in rebuilding the blood supply,” said Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. “Southern Nevadans have responded throughout this crisis, and we need that support to continue through the final weeks of summer.”

Because blood cannot be manufactured and has a limited shelf life, hospitals rely entirely on volunteer donors to assist accident victims, cancer patients, and those undergoing complex surgeries.
Incentives for Donors
To encourage turnout, the Red Cross is offering a $20 Amazon gift card via email to anyone who donates blood or platelets between Aug. 1 and Aug. 31, 2026. Additionally, those who donate platelets between Aug. 1 and Aug. 15 will receive a limited-edition Red Cross clear mini backpack, while supplies last.
Donors can schedule an appointment using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, online at Red Cross Blood, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
