Las Vegas Catholics react to first American-born pope

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Las Vegas Catholics reacted to the election of Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pope in the history of the Catholic Church.

Formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago, Pope Leo XIV was elected following the second day of voting inside the Sistine Chapel.

White smoke rose above the Vatican Thursday, signaling the decision.

In Las Vegas, bells chiming were heard for over an hour, inviting people to come share a prayer and celebrate the first American-born pope.

Archbishop George Leo Thomas said the moment carried deep meaning – not just globally, but personally. He explained he met the then cardinal back in 2023 for lunch.

“He has the demeanor of a parish priest, simple and humble. He was dressed in a black suit, I had no idea that we were talking to someone who had such influence and power within the Vatican circles,” Thomas said.

At Guardian Angel Cathedral, parishioners gathered for prayer – and to reflect on what this moment means for the future of the faith.

“I think he will be a wonderful shepherd for the church and we’ll go in ways that we don’t even know yet because the future is beyond us,” Regina Smutz said.

For others, the election of a pope from North America feels like a hopeful turn – one that might offer a new beginning

“I’m excited because I feel that right now America is not in really good graces. So, I think this helps, and not only that, but it’s also good to have a different perspective,” said Elda Valdivia.

Archbishop Leo Thomas added Pope Leo the XIV will bring humility, global experience and a heart for the poor.

“I hope he carries on Pope Francis’ ideologies, and I hope that he brings us all together and that we continue to pray for World Peace,” Valdivia said.

The Archdiocese of Las Vegas announced they will hold a special mass to honor new Pope Leo XIV in the next coming days. A date has not been announced yet.
