LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Near the end of every school year, the Clark County School District talks about what it plans to do over the summer for the safety of students and staff.

Thursday’s meeting focused on preventing tragedies like the death of a high school senior last week. McKenzie Scott was hit and killed by an alleged drunk driver.

“We know that an effort for student safety requires every single one of us,” said Superintendent Jhone Ebert. “Everybody in our community, if you think about it, just left ten minutes earlier for wherever you need to be – you’re not feeling rushed to get where you’re at.”

Ebert and the district are facing calls to action, as parents and students made impassioned pleas Wednesday outside Arbor View High School, where Scott was killed on her way off campus. They asked for more crossing guards and other safety features for students walking to and from school.

FOX5 asked district officials what’s being done to that end, and was told a study over the summer will look at which intersections need crossing guards.

“That would be an all-in approach that we look at – are crossing guards necessary at particular schools depending on traffic patterns and the design of the roadways,” said Tod Story, chief communications officer for CCSD.

The issue of crossing guards falls on municipalities to figure out. The City of Las Vegas tells FOX5 it’s getting ready to look at results from one of its own studies about crossing guards at Cimarron High School.

Traffic enforcement was another focus of Thursday’s conference.

“Inattentive driving is the cause of the majority of these accidents that are causing the harm and injuries to our students,” Chief Henry Blackeye with CCSD Police said.

Chief Blackeye said 113 kids have been hit by cars around CCSD schools this year, which is down from 139 last year. He said even one is two many. Adding more traffic officers has helped, he said.

CCSD has sent social workers to Arbor View High School since Scott’s death, including to the school’s prom last weekend.
