LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The City of Las Vegas is expanding efforts to address homelessness throughout the downtown corridor, officials announced Thursday.

Mayor Shelley Berkley said more than 300 unsheltered people have been connected to services in recent months through a targeted initiative. The current focus centers on a six-block radius surrounding City Hall.

The program pairs mental health professionals and street outreach teams with community court diversion programs, utilizing urban planning assistance from a partnership with Harvard and Bloomberg.

“It’s not only getting people off the street,” Berkley said. “It’s very easy to say, ‘You got to move, but you can’t be here,’ and then three days later, they’re exactly where they were. So this is providing wraparound services… so they can stay off the street.”

City officials plan to expand the outreach teams into adjacent neighborhoods across the valley once the current downtown pilot area stabilizes.
