LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The city of Las Vegas held an awards ceremony for the Compassionate Las Vegas initiative, honoring community members for their compassion.
Community members were invited to nominate people who show their compassion for the people of the valley. Categories included health and wellness, education, housing security and human trafficking prevention.
The winners come from all different walks of life and include a nationally recognized conservationist, a local author and a high school student.
Clark High School senior Skai Jones won a new category, the Shining Youth Award, for co-founding the Youth for Youth Holiday Concert with her sister.

“It really just started as like a holiday concert for fun to bring our friends together. But then we had a good turnout,” said Jones. “Then the next year we decided to fundraise with the tickets, donations for raffles, sponsors, things like that. And then since then, over the years, we were able to raise over $150,000 to give back to underserved youth in our community.”
Councilwoman Shondra Summers-Armstrong said it’s important for community leaders to recognize and lift up the people doing the hard work to make the valley a better place.
“These are the things that create a community, a place where we want to live, that we care about and see one another, and that we address the needs of one another,” she said.
Compassionate Las Vegas also offers a fellowship to teach community leaders about the power of teamwork, trust and collaboration.
