LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas Metro Police graduated 43 new officers Tuesday after six months of training at the police academy.
The new recruits come from diverse professional backgrounds, including a former barber, bartender and massage therapist who now share the same title of Metro Police officer.
Personal journeys drive new officers
Joshua Fisher, one of the graduates, said his sons motivated him throughout the challenging academy experience.
“From bloody noses to tears to sweat, it was a journey,” Fisher said. “I guess I get emotional because I did this for them 100% and they can see their father in a different environment, in a different platform.”
Recruit Gisel Pena’s dream to become a police officer began when she was 8 years old. A call for help introduced her to two officers who made a lasting impression and inspired her to wear the same uniform.
“I remember very well how they looked and everything, and I said to myself one day, if I can become a police officer, I would like to make someone else feel the way they made me feel,” Pena said.
Full circle moment at graduation
Fifteen years later, as Pena walked across the graduation stage, the same two officers who once answered her childhood call surprised her at the ceremony. The moment left her family in tears.
“I can’t contain the excitement I feel for her, and it’s such a beautiful thing to have a warrior in the house,” said Alma Morga, Pena’s mother.
The Las Vegas Metro Police Department continues to seek new recruits who must be 21 years or older, have a driver’s license and pass a background check.
