LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Las Vegas Planning Commission approved a new project that would provide veterans with affordable housing, after similar proposals were rejected by North Las Vegas in recent years.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is planning on developing a 112-unit veterans housing village to support homeless veterans. It was originally planned in North Las Vegas near the VA hospital but faced challenges during development.
Veterans celebrate approval
“It’s like a dream come true because we worked so hard to get it approved in North Las Vegas but they kept giving us the runaround,” Purple Heart recipient and veteran Vincent Palmieri told FOX5.
Veterans said they are excited the project will be right next to a VA center, making it easier to access services in a decent area.
Palmieri added, “You want to put them in an environment that’s going to help them succeed and be an asset to the community.”
Growing veteran population drives need
The VA said last week the veteran community is growing rapidly in Las Vegas, one of the fastest-growing in the nation, making the need for resources a priority.
“Veterans housing is needed in Las Vegas because we’re starting to see the migration from other states coming to Las Vegas,” Tim Smith, another veteran, said.
The campus is expected to include parking and plenty of greenery, like trees surrounding the property.
Smith added, “What I’m hoping for is for more services.”
Veterans said this is a big step in the right direction and they have been hoping for this outcome for three years. They also thanked the city of Las Vegas for moving quickly, saying it took just six months to get approval.
Veterans also noted they are seeing large veteran populations in places like North Las Vegas, Pahrump, and Boulder City, and they hope more locations can be built there as well.
