LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A Las Vegas Valley post office was forced to close and evacuate after employees found mercury Thursday.

According to USPS, employees found about half a tablespoon of mercury at the Henderson Main Post Office. The Henderson Fire Department’s HAZMAT team responded just before 3 p.m.

Officials initially said they were investigating an “unknown substance.” No injuries were reported, and the building was forced to evacuate.

Las Vegas Metro Police’s ARMOR unit also responded.

USPS said the facility was closed out of an abundance of caution, but it was not a permanent closure. Officials say more details will become available regarding the office reopening.

“The Postal Service wants to remind customers that mercury metal and devices containing mercury metal are always prohibited from mailing,“ USPS said.

USPS said mailers can review Publication 52, Hazardous, Restricted and Perishable Mail, available on the Postal Explorer site, for more information.
