LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The City of Las Vegas is preparing for Memorial Day next week with thousands of American flags now decorating Police Memorial Park.

City leaders said more than 150 volunteers of all ages showed up to help place more than 6,000 flags around the park. The flags honor fallen troops, police officers and firefighters.

City leaders said the field of flags will serve as a backdrop for a remembrance ceremony Thursday, where they will read the names of every fallen police officer in southern Nevada since the first killed in 1866.

The field of flags is also open to the public hoping to honor those lost.

“We put a walking path in the middle of what we’re referring to as Freedom Field. The public is welcome to come and walk amongst the flags. I’ve seen the young folks take selfies. It’s a time to reflect and honor,” said Francis Allen-Palenske, Las Vegas city councilmember for Ward 4.

The flags will be up through Memorial Day on Monday. There is another community volunteer opportunity to take the flags down at 7 p.m. Monday at Police Memorial Park.
