LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A mother is feeling violated after she said her middle-school-aged daughter undressed in a school’s closet with a camera inside.
The incident happened on Monday at Jerome D. Mack Middle School. FOX5 is not identifying the family to protect their privacy.
“I’m one angry Mama bear,” she said.
The mother explained a group of girls, including her daughter, were directed into a closet to change after P.E. She says the closet held a camera.
“I don’t even really know who I’m angry with. I’m just angry at the whole thing,” she says. “The protocol fell apart.”
In a statement, a Clark County School District spokesperson said, “on Monday, at Jerome D. Mack Middle School, a security camera was located in a storage closet for securing valuable items. As a precaution, CCSD Police were contacted to investigate the matter.”
“For me, it’s more like, why are you recording my children? And then behind the school’s back? So my daughter goes in there to change with other little girls,” the mother said.
She said it’s still not clear if the camera was recording. What’s haunting her the most is whether or not footage of her daughter exists, and where that footage may be.
“This footage of my underage daughter, 12-years-old, changing out of her P.E. clothes, an innocent child,” she expressed.
She said she wants someone to be held accountable for allowing this to happen.
“I’m gonna fight for my daughter,” she says. “This is unacceptable.”
In a statement, a district spokesperson said, “CCSD Police will complete their investigation regarding the purpose of the camera. If deemed necessary, additional actions may be taken.”
The mother said she met with the school’s principal Wednesday. She said the principal could not tell her much, but said that she did what she could, and contacted authorities.
She said her daughter also brought home a ‘victim’s information guide’ from CCSD Police. At the top, it reads “Offense: Surreptitious Electronic Surveillance.”
FOX5 asked the district for any available documents from the incident, and the status of the employee who placed the camera.
