LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — As Memorial Day approaches on May 25 — and marks the start of the “100 Deadliest Days” that ends on Labor Day — the Nevada Zero Fatalities program is reminding drivers to make safe choices on the road.
With many new drivers on the road during summer break, the Nevada Zero Fatalities program is urging everyone to be cautious and drive safely with these tips:
Safety Tips for Teens
- Don’t drive distracted: Most teen crashes involve distractions. Put phones away, focus on the road, and keep passengers from distracting the driver.
- Don’t speed: Speeding is a factor in many fatal teen crashes. Follow speed limits, slow down for weather/road conditions, and don’t tailgate.
- Don’t drive impaired: Never drive after drinking or using drugs. Use a designated driver or rideshare.
- Wear a seatbelt: Buckle up every trip—front and back seats.
Safety tips for parents
- Lead by example: No distractions, follow speed limits, always wear a seatbelt, and give teens plenty of supervised practice (about 50 hours).
- Refresh defensive driving: Teach teens to stay alert, look for hazards, and keep a safe distance; consider a refresher course to stay current on best practices.

Officials say the summer stretch is historically one of the most dangerous times in Nevada, especially for teen drivers, who are three times more likely than adults to be involved in a fatal crash.
Nevada Zero Fatalities has also partnered with Lyft to encourage safe rides home for those celebrating. The promo code SAFERIDEMEMORIAL offers $5 off rides from May 25 at 12 p.m. through May 26 at 4 a.m., limited to 300 riders and one use per person.
So far this year, Nevada has recorded 105 roadway deaths. The program says preventing crashes is a shared responsibility—and that anything less than zero fatalities is unacceptable.
