LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — One homeless man at Sunset Park, near Harry Reid Airport, says he’s seen the problems firsthand in parking lots after the park closes.
“We call them zombies,” said the man.
He added, “But when they’re done, they leave crushed beer cans and bottle caps and plastic ware.”
But to keep cars out of the park, Clark County Commissioner Jim Gibson says new gates are installed at all of the park’s six car entrances. They are expecting to be operational by October 15.
“These new gates will help to ensure that activities that challenge the safety of the park in the overnight hours are mitigated as much as possible and represent another resource the County has put in place to increase park safety for the betterment of our community,” said Commissioner Gibson in a recent newsletter.
Commissioner Gibson says in 2023, the county started closing restrooms in the overnight hours to reduce unwanted activities such as vandalism. He says the county has also increased police patrols in park.
“The County’s no camping ban went into effect in February of this year and prohibits camping in places such as trails, parks, underpasses, washes and tunnels. The County’s enforcement of this ordinance includes attempts to offer resources to those in need as a first step, but those who are not in compliance are subject to additional penalties, as provided bed space is available,” he said in his newsletter.
The homeless man we talked to says he moves his belongs out of the park at night because of a citation threat, saying he’s already been cited. He says he then moves things back in when the park reopens in the morning.
The gates will block entrances to vehicles when the park closes at 11pm until 6am the next day.
