LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — North Las Vegas police shared photos and videos of its first and deadly police shooting in 2026.

The North Las Vegas Police Department said the shooting happened just after 4:30 p.m. on April 29, at East Gowan Road and North 5th Street. Police identified the suspect as Khalil Normi Jamal Smith, 31.

Police said Smith drove a Ford Flex in the area and crashed into a Nissan Versa. The Nissan’s driver was 44, and she had her two children, 16 and 13, in the car.

Police said the woman and her children were transported to the hospital to treat “minor” injuries. Smith, however, acted “erratically” and “aggressively” toward people nearby. Police said he then climbed on top of his Ford Flex and was armed with scissors.

Moments later, police said he jumped from the car and charged toward an officer. Police fired their weapons, striking him.

Police said Smith would disobey orders to stay down and drop his weapon. He got up multiple times again, and officers are seen firing their weapons.

Police were later able to take him into custody and immediately provide medical aid. Police said he continued to act aggressively while in custody, biting an assisting officer.

Smith was transported to UMC and later died, according to police. Had he survived, North Las Vegas police said he would be charged with two counts of attempted murder, battery, and resisting.

Police said Smith did not have a prior criminal history in Nevada nor national databases.

Oficer Moreno was hired in 2023, and Miranda joined in 2024. Police did not provide exactly how many shots were fired in this incident. Police said the investigation is ongoing.

The two officers are on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues.
