LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada approved a plan Tuesday morning that would repay more than 100,000 NV Energy customers who were overcharged for more than 20 years.
According to filings from NV Energy, the majority of impacted customers were overcharged after being misclassified under the single-family rate while living in multi-family dwellings. NV Energy originally only wanted to issue refunds going back six months and only wanted to issue around $17 million in refunds, but has since changed course.
The agreement approved today issues between $63.2 and $65.5 million to all affected customers. NV Energy will issue the first refund checks within 120 days of the decision, and plans to complete reimbursement within 210 days.
A short time after commissioners voted to approve the repayment plan, NV Energy President and CEO Brandon Barkhuff issued this statement:
“The resolution reached is an important milestone, and we are pleased to move forward in making customers whole. We know this mistake caused frustration and financial impact for our customers, and I am truly sorry for that. Making this right is our responsibility and today’s resolution allows us to do that in a way that is fair and thorough. We appreciate the collaboration and dedication of the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada and the Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection in helping us reach a fair and thorough outcome. Our focus has been, and continues to be, ensuring billing accuracy, transparency and trust with our customers.”
NV Energy says it hopes to have the entire process complete by late September at the very latest.
