LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Several drivers say a trip down a Las Vegas road ended with their cars headed to the shop Sunday night after hitting a raised metal utility cover near Jones and Hacienda.
Natasha Vazquez Acosta described the moment her car hit the cover.
“It was, like, boom, boom,” Vazquez Acosta said.
Vazquez Acosta said the impact happened around 11:15 p.m.
“So even if we tried to swerve there, we would have hit the car next to us, so it would have caused an accident as well,” Vazquez Acosta said.
Another driver hits the same spot
After pulling over to inspect the damage, Vazquez Acosta found another driver, Roxana Teran, already dealing with damage from hitting the same spot.
“This is so dangerous, and we were left waiting there for over two hours,” Teran said.
Teran said she and Vazquez Acosta walked back and found the metal cover raised above the roadway.
“It’s like a lid of some sort that was sticking out and open; it’s a really big piece of metal,” Teran said.
More vehicles hit the same area
Both women said other vehicles continued hitting the same area while they were there.
“With 311 on the line, another car passed by, hit it. We were all trying to wave them down,” Teran said.
The women said they called for help several times, contacting 311 and later 911.
“In total, it was four cars in the moment that we were there; we had four cars damaged, and no one was coming to help,” Teran said.
Vazquez Acosta said her two tires and rims will cost about $1,200 to repair.
“Yes, I am without a car. It’s at the shop. We only have one car. I take my kids across town,” Vazquez Acosta said.
Drivers left before help arrived
The two women left the intersection around 1 a.m. after no one arrived to help, they said.
The Las Vegas Valley Water District said it had not received reports of an incident near Hacienda and Jones. As a precaution, the district replaced three valve covers Monday morning.
Las Vegas Metro Police said they were unable to find any calls for service at that intersection matching that description.
Drivers who come across a similar road hazard can report it by calling 311.
