LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Drivers and pedestrians along Nellis Boulevard are dealing with narrowed lanes and the odor of wastewater as crews work to upgrade sewer infrastructure, officials said.
Traffic has been restricted to a single lane in both directions near Twain Avenue, affecting a stretch between Flamingo Road and Desert Inn Road, according to the Las Vegas Valley Water District.
Michael Phillips, Communication and Government Affairs Representative for the district, said the smell is expected when crews have the sewer opened during repairs.
“We are noticing a little smell of wastewater right now, and when they have the sewer opened up, you do smell it,” Phillips said.

Phillips said the work was prompted by emergency conditions found during an assessment along Nellis Boulevard.
“We did a study of all the manholes throughout Nellis Boulevard, and seven are deteriorating to a level that we had to take emergency action,” he said.
Officials also urged residents to be mindful of what goes into sinks and toilets, noting that improper disposal can contribute to clogs and costly repairs.
“Have us all keep in mind of what we’re putting down the drain,” Phillips said, adding that so-called disposable wipes can clog pipes.
The project began July 13 and is expected to be completed by Aug. 10, Phillips said.
He added that the odor should fade once the work is finished.
